I was happy for him to leave from a football point of view.

Re: Downing
I can certainly understand him being keen on a contract that takes him to 36 and going home
I guess someone has to come from there and some must like it.
That's the slightly odd bit for a multi-millionaire who could live anywhere

Re: Downing
On that podcast KUMB did with the Sullivans. David Sullivan said Downing kept begging him to be released:-

“Downing phoned me personally and asked three times to leave so it is nothing to do that he didn’t feel wanted, they offered him a five year contract on more money than he was on with us which is incredible for a Championship side, he was on big money with us. What Downing has said is dam right lies, I can say that, look at his phone bill and you can see he personally phoned me up desperately wanting to go back to Middlesborough, it was his home town club. We said we would like to to stay, we don’t want you to go and he said I don’t want to stay, he has now said he didn’t feel (loved), no-one asked him, he went for financial reasons and they then have to justify it and tell fibs. They just made him an incredible offer and he’s gone back to his home town club, they gave him a 4 to 5 year contract, I can see his point of view, we wish him all the best, we wish Middlesborough get promotion because we get a million and a half quid more, we will be cheering them on”

Re: Downing
Don't miss him. Was great playing in the middle but out wide he went missing and did a bottle job.

Payet is much better player playing in that central role.

Love the quotes from Sullivan! has truly shown him up to be a greedy busy cunt! The bloke sounds like a complete wuss.

Enjoy the Championship Stewart and say hello to Mohammed Diame for us while your at it.

Not fit to tie Payet's laces!

In his career with us he had 4 great months and otherwise was a coward.

As has been said, he wouldn't get in our side now.

Re: Downing
Maybe the reason he went back was because he left his back bone up there and has gone back to find it?

Re: Downing
The thing is he wants to pal up with the Borough fans which is fair enough so saying it was an easy choice to move back to his home town club would of been fine, but to keep going on about wanting to leave West Ham and Bilic as we were not going to be aiming at anything above 9th or 10th is a joke - we are probably showing more ambition at this point in time than we have for decades!

did he actually say this though?

if he did then he's a cunt

Re: Downing
Absolutely don't care.

Whatever any footballer says, it's largely to appease the supporters of their current club whether it's true or not.

He's not our player any more. I liked him but he's moved on, and i hope he gets them promoted.

Re: Downing
I was told we got a fantastic deal for him as well for a 31 year old
6 million up front which is pretty rare these days and we get 2million if boro go up this season and 1million if go up anytime during the length of his contract

Re: Downing
Bearing in mind the players we've brought in his sale was terrific business for us. Decent at times, but I doubt he would even have made the bench once everyone's fit.

Cunty and classless to try putting us down - so easy to say that he enjoyed his time at West Ham but the lure of his home club and helping them get promoted was too much to resist. Instead acts like a flouncy fucking pansy.

Re: Downing
He did look excellent in the centre at the beginning of last season, but fuck me, what a gutless cunt, I know footballers live in a different world and all that, but for 60 bags a week deserves commitment of a certain level, to flail your foot in when going into a tackle like an anaemic leper putting their foot into freezing cold water, every single time, was a fucking disgrace, and it's a shame the cunt didn't end up getting hurt.

I don't usually give a fuck when former players pipe up to please their new crowd, but this spineless cunt puffing out his chest with words really grinds my gears. I hope someone goes straight through him.

Re: Downing
I was disappointed when we signed him particularly considering the money paid for him

To be honest I never rated him even when he got picked for England

I felt I was going to be proved wrong when he put in some outstanding performances at the start of last season playing at the tip of the diamond

However, it didn't last & his powderpuff tackling became very frustrating

He wouldn't get into the current team now

I expect he could see that coming so decided to move on. Good luck to him

For the money we got for him, at his age, we should be laughing all the way to the bank

Less than half the time at West Ham did he deliver much...

Bottler...moody...hit & miss performances...

Glad we got 5million and cleared his wages...

Re: DOWNING
If he has a problem with anything at our club it should really be the fact that he forced his way back into the engkabd setup playing in the hole, then as soon as nolan was fit he got shoved out wide again (where he was average at best)

Bristol City away last season was genius - there was a whole section in the build up to the game about how dangerous he'd been in his new position with all the pundits saying how impressed they were. Match starts and there's nolan in the hole, downing hidden out wide
